The Eagleman Stag

The Eagleman Stagg – Michael Please
“Peter’s life has been spent in both fascination and fear of his quickening perception of time with age. As he nears the end of his days, his interest turns to obsession and he undertakes progressively extreme measures to control and counter time’s increasing pace.” http://www.shortoftheweek.com/2012/05/08/the-eagleman-stag/ 28/01/2013

‘The Eagleman Stagg’ is a stop-motion puppetry animation written and created by Micheal Please in 2010. It is a documentary style animation that follows the obsessive discoveries of one character named ‘Peter’.

The story evolves entirely within a monochrome white set, adding a stark and bland sense of atmosphere to an otherwise emotional and thought provoking storyline.

This mentioned storyline explores the issues and fear that all of humanity are bound to face when thinking about the end of our lives, this animation explores the way in which one is to deal with the aspect of their demise.

The stunning creation of the stop-motion puppets used within this animation manages to add a theme of visual interest, with the plain background shade allowing you to focus more on the detail that has been added to the creation of the puppets and the sets.

Above are two images taken from the film, on the left is a still of the amazing puppet of ‘Peter’.  https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-PxPAYWlE7sE/ToCmsA7VuQI/AAAAAAAAAz8/v5xlUxzKggg/stag5.jpg

On the right is a photograph of the set up of the animation in progress. http://thefilmexperience.net/storage/2012/eaglemanstag-brilliant.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1358723284765 You can see from this right image the detail in which the models and entire set where arranged with.

Even though this animation is found to be pleasing to the mind and eyes of the viewing public, I think that it could be better if it where to have included some colour, even if that only the puppets or beetles were coloured. I think it could have added another depth to the film and possibly have given it a more interesting visual.
